When she graduated in 1992 Amanda Bossard began her study of marine biology in Anchorage from Alaska Pacific University. Bossard started her profession as a commercial fish worker in 1999. Bossard began working with the ship F/V Sunset an a65' halibut-schooner and was later converted into a salmon tender in the name of Murat Aritan, who had been working in commercial fishing since 1993. Bossard is now married to Aritan and the couple has come together to prove their rights to the industry. They both believe in conservation as well as profiting from renewable resources in the industry of seafood. Otolith is an independent wholesale distributor of seafood which was founded by a woman in Philadelphia in 2007, by a now-mother of two young children: Bella age 3 and Andre age 1. Its name is an affectionate reminder of her intimate understanding of fish biology and her husband's long connection to the industry of seafood, often keeping them from each other for 5 months or more when they are focused on their financial and environmental goals which are a reflection of their individuality and determination to serve their communities wherever they live. Bossard, her son Andre and Isabella, her daughter Isabella will be returning back to Southeast Alaska every summer as deckhands in the salmon season. A small 42-salmon trolling vessel using hooks and lines to catch their targeted salmon, they are joined by Aritan during two consecutive months of selling to local processors, and then continuing to increase their direct market seafood offerings sold by Otolith Sustainable Seafood by way by purchasing custom processing capabilities of small processors who create distinctive wild-caught seafood that reflects their dedication to quality and environmental sustainability.
